Boxer Breed Information
Because the boxer is such a young breed there is quite a bundle of information recorded by the breeders. Not only is the history charted but also the entire first lengths of genealogy are carefully recorded. Still the name of the boxer breed comes from unknown origins and although there are some theories it is safe to say that there will not be a true answer for a while. The boxer was bred in order to combine to very fine version of dogs to get an even better dog and although the boxer is an excellent example of a dog it also gained diseases and faults from both dogs.
Boxer Breed Information – History
The boxer breed was created in Germany in the late 19th century by crossbreeding brabanter, a smaller version
of the German bullenbeisser, with the English bulldog. The bullenbeisser had been around for several centuries
helping humans hunt and attack bears, wild boars and deer. Over time a smaller and faster version of this dog
was bred and the variety was named brabanter. The brabanter was crossbred with the English bulldog but few
were happy with the results, still there was no clear breed of boxers to be found.
Three German breeders were persistent though, and they were sure that it was possible to stabilize the
boxer breed into one uniform quality.
After some breeding and crossbreeding these three Germans produced the very first boxer ever
and “Meta von der Passage” was her name. Meta von der Passage gave birth to an amazing amount
of puppies, all of which with high quality and distinct similarities. The puppies from this single dog
were used to stabilize the breed and in 1894 the three German breeders made a template for boxer breed
information. One year after that the first boxers performed in a dog show in Munich and one year after
this the first boxer club was established, instant success. It was not long after this that the boxer
was bred all over the world and soon it found its place as a trusty companion to humans everywhere.
Boxer Breed Information – Name
One common misconception is that the boxer breed got its name from the fact that it generally begins a fight by standing on its both hind legs while boxing with its front paws. Although an elegant explanation it is not very likely that German breeders would have named their new proud breed after such an extreme national British symbol as the sport boxing, although it is still possible. Another theory is that the name comes from the boxer breeds colouring since the term “boxl” supposedly means short trousers or underwear and that boxer just is a corruption of that word. It is also possible that the name derived from a small group of dogs that generally attended restaurants together with their masters. These groups were known as “bierboxer” but it is not known if this word came before or after the release of this brand new breed.
Boxer Breed Information – Characteristics
The boxer breed is an extremely intelligent and loyal dog which fits perfectly both as a family companion and a sturdy working dog. Although it can be quite stubborn and often will try to get the upper hand on its master it has a high sense of duty and will not abandon from a mission. The boxer is quite good with children but needs some discipline since it is a big and strong dog capable of inflicting massive injury just from a simple mistake. Naturally hesitant towards strangers the boxer can become a fine guard dog, but it needs training since it at the same time is eager to make new friends to play with.
