Boxer Dog
The boxer dog is not at all a very old breed of dog, slightly over 100 years, but do have such a unique appearance that it is well known all across the planet. The boxer is a medium-sized dog with short hair and has been used as a working dog in many different kinds of missions. The boxer is also a great addition to the family as it has both a mild temper and an intellect above average. The Boxer dog is quite strong and hard-headed though and will need extensive obedience training as early as possible.
Boxer Dog – History
The boxer is a combination of German bullenbeisser, a dog of Mastiff descent, and the English bulldog.
The bullenbeisser had been around for several centuries and was favoured while hunting bear, wild boar and deer.
It was a very large dog which job was to attack and hold the prey in place until the hunters could arrive at the scene,
it was dangerous work and many German bullenbeisser got hurt in these hunts.
As times changed and faster dogs became the favourite the bullenbeisser was then bred to be smaller and more agile, this smaller bullenbeisser was known as the brabanter. The brabanter was then crossbred with the English bulldog, thus starting the line of boxers. In 1894 three Germans decided to stabilize the boxer breed and started to formalize the dog characteristics so there would be a perfect model for dog shows. The first dog show for boxers was held in Munich in 1895 and the year after the first boxer club ever was established. Shortly after this new boxer dog clubs started to pop up all over the western world and is today one of the most common species among dog owners.
Boxer Dog – Characteristics
The most important part of the boxer is its head since it both needs to be in perfect proportion to the body and have exactly the right characteristics established by those three Germans over a hundred years ago. Although a slightly heavier head than body can be tolerated it should never be to light in proportion to the body. The boxer dogs muzzle should be perfectly positioned have a perfect form and should be proportioned so it takes up one-third of the entire head. The boxer dog should have a slight underbite with the lower jaw just outside the upper one. A healthy adult boxer should weigh something between 25 to 32 kg and be around 55 centimetres tall at the withers.
Boxer Dog – Uses
The boxer was found to be a very sturdy, fast and loyal dog which made it perfect for military service during both the First and the Second World War. Messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog and guard dog was only some of the missions that the boxer dog had during war time, and today it is still favoured as a guard dog and as a police dog in special K9-units. The boxer has also proved worthy as a service dog, such as guide dog for blinds, because of its intelligence and loyalty to both its master and its duties. |
