Boxer Health
It is unfortunate to say that although the boxer is a very exciting breed it is also prone to a variety of quite serious diseases. The reason to this low boxer health is hard to say but sometimes crossbreeds, such as the boxer, will get the bad parts out of the breeds it has derived from including some new ones that appeared when they were combined. Luckily most diseases can be avoided, or at least helped, if you are prepared. Your boxer’s life depends upon your preparations and your ability to spot symptoms early.
Boxer Health – Bloat
The boxer is a deep-chested dog breed which makes it extremely susceptible to a condition known as bloat. Bloat is when the boxer’s stomach extends due to collection of gases in the abdomen. Because of a distortion in the stomach the boxer is not able to pass gas and instead it is collected and bloats the stomach. This is extremely hard to prevent in a boxer and although a little gas is not dangerous a lot can be life threatening so it is best to go see a doctor as soon as the boxer seems just a little bloated.
Boxer Health – Cancer
More or less all people today know of cancer and most of them know that it also can affect dogs. It is sad to say that different kinds of cancer is a very common disease among boxers and since a dog can not tell you that something is wrong the way a human can it can be to late to save the trusty companion once the cancer is found. Cancer is a genetic malfunction within normal cells causing them to divide although they do not fill any function within the body, instead of self-destructing as they are supposed to. Cancer is a major problem for boxer health and often strikes the dog’s abdomen making it rather difficult to detect in time. Regular veterinary check-ups are preferred.
Boxer Health – Hip dysplasia
Although also occurring among humans, hip dysplasia is a much larger problem for dogs than it is for their masters. Hip dysplacia is a joint failure at the hip and since dogs can not use canes, wheelchairs or any other helpful inventions it can become a serious problem with lameness and extreme pain as possible effects. If a dog shows to be limping for no apparent reason it is a good idea to let the veterinarian take a look so it is not hip dysplacia. If found out early there are a lot of things that the veterinarian can do to help, although results may vary.
Boxer Health – Heart conditions
The boxer can also fall victim for a variety of heart diseases, including arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy also known as boxer cardiomyopathy which can lead to death if not treated. Another dangerous heart condition that negatively affects boxer health is aortic stenosis. It will cause a lower blood pressure making the dog weaker and dizzier for no apparent reason. A veterinarian will have to take a look if the boxer for some reason does not seem to have as much energy as before.
